What is Pickleball?

Pickleball blends elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong into something fun and easy to pick up. The court is about the size of a badminton court. The game is usually played in doubles, though you can play singles too. The rules are pretty simple: you serve diagonally, and you score points when your opponents can’t return the ball within the court. One of the quirkiest parts of pickleball is the "kitchen," a no-volley zone near the net where you can’t smash the ball. This rule keeps the game strategic and stops players from just camping out at the net.

As a beginner, the most important thing is to get comfortable with the basic strokes: serving, hitting forehands and backhands, and volleying. Start by practicing your serve since it kicks off every rally. In pickleball, serves are underhand, with the paddle below your waist, and need to land in the opposite diagonal court. Once you’ve got that down, work on your dink shots; these are soft, controlled hits that land just over the net in the kitchen, making your opponents move up and potentially make a mistake. Good footwork and positioning are key, so stay light on your feet, keep your paddle up, and always watch the ball. As you play more, you’ll find that pickleball is not only easy to learn but also super addictive!
